It has been said that trust takes years to build but sadly can be lost overnight. Building trust however might be a difficult task as experience has taught a lot of people not to trust anyone. Trust is foundational for any relationship, whether business or personal.
When trust breaks, a fracture occurs in the relationship. These fractures weaken the foundation of the relationship, with more fractures creating an overall unstable relationship. There are steps which we can take to commence the trust building process and one of my favorite websites - dumblittleman - explains some of these steps;
Lead by example. Show people what trust looks like by acting like a person who is worthy of trust. They will eventually take a cue from you and begin to trust you gradually.
Be transparent. Open communication is essential for building trust so you need to create grounds that can allow for that and the more transparent you are, the more the other party gets comfortable with the idea of trusting you.
Discuss trust issues. It’s important to discuss any factor(s) that can be a hindrance to you trusting someone and vice versa either at work, home, or in any other setting depending on who you’re dealing with.
Match your words and your actions. When you say one thing and then do something different, there is a break in trust because you have created dissonance in your behaviour that does not ring of authenticity. When your words and actions match, there is not a question of which is your true nature.
