Drama exists everywhere. In church, home, school, work etc. it is safe to say that drama exists in our lives in different ways. Drama isn’t necessarily negative or positive. It’s just drama and our reaction towards it determines how it’ll affect us whether positively or negatively. Our concern today is on workplace drama.
I’ve worked in a few places and from what I hear about other places I haven’t worked at, it pretty much is the same thing. It’s inevitable, drama I mean. You can’t put people with different temperament, background, exposure, habits, etc in one place and expect it to be all fun and games.
There are ways to avoid being affected by this drama when it arises and that’s the essence of this post.
Thread carefully. If you’re new on the job or at your workplace, it’s important for you to observe everyone well enough to decide how you’ll relate with them. You won’t relate with them the same way because they differ from each other. Only through careful observation is how you’ll know the best way to behave with everyone.
Do your job. Remember that you were recruited for a purpose, that’s the purpose you should work at. Whatever your job function is, face it. You won’t always be perfect at it of course and it might even be a cause for drama as well if your superiors or colleagues think you do everything wrong – which can rarely be the case. Learn as much as you can about your job function. Ask valid questions that would enable you work better.
Expect nothing. When you have no expectations, there’s hardly going to be disappointment. Don’t expect anyone to be nice to you or to like you. Those kinds of expectations when not met will hit you hard. The only thing you should expect from everyone is to do their own job; other expectations are far from valid.
Realise that your colleagues are not your friends. It is very important to know that your colleagues are not your friends. Thinking they’re your friends will lead to you having unnecessary expectations of them. I’ve been lucky enough to work with very amazing people who have even become closer than I expected but it didn’t start that way. I’ve also worked with people I thought were more than colleagues but once a work issue happened, everything became clear.
